If you read enough, you'll find connections between knowledge, which makes memorization easier. New knowledge often has similarities with old knowledge that has been mastered. When you build a broad framework of knowledge, you have a place to store all kinds of information.
When learning science, you can first read some stories about the history of science and scientists. Find out when they first had questions, what tools they used, and how they got inspired and finally found a breakthrough. You can create a timeline in your mind, or draw a map, or imagine a tree. On this tree, different fields of science branch out, and you can determine what is known and what is unknown. This progressive and incremental knowledge expansion method is easier to process and maintain.
If you have no idea about a certain area of knowledge, such as Rome, you may find it hard to remember when someone first tells you something about Rome. You may be wondering: ‘Why do you want me to read a book about Rome? I'm obviously reading a book about Queen Victoria!’ The initial stage of building a knowledge system can indeed be confusing and challenging. But once you build a rough outline of the system, all the knowledge can be automatically summarized into the appropriate location. Later, you will find that this process becomes more and more interesting, and you will start to think: ‘Which area should this knowledge belong to?’ or ‘How does this new knowledge conflict with my existing knowledge?’ When you read something similar to You may be troubled by inconsistencies in your known knowledge, but it may also inspire you to investigate and research further.
Building a knowledge system is like playing chess. If you randomly place the pieces on a chess board and ask a chess player to memorize the layout, they may not be able to do it. Chess players can memorize chess games because they understand the logic behind each move. If the pieces are placed with no logic or order, even chess players may not be able to remember it because their thinking and memory patterns are not set up that way.
